The specific VW bolts mentioned here were used for several purposes. First of all, 4 were used to fix the lever shocks that were used in the early years of the Beetle and the Volkswagen Bus. Next to that, 4 were used to attach the struts to the underside of the VW Beetle 1303. They were also used to mount the rear shocks on the VW Split Bus and 2 or 4 are needed on the VW Type 3.
You'll probably wonder why these bolts were specifically designed by Volkswagens, they seem to be pretty universal. For starters, they have a smaller wrench size than a standard M12 bolt, the length of the chest is different, which is necessary for the function they were designed for, and they have a hardness of 10.9.
