The fuel tank float (sender unit) is secured in the fuel tank with bolts or screws, depending on the Volkswagen model and year of manufacture. To ensure that no leakage can occur through the threads, copper washers around the bolts or screws provide a seal.
When the bolts or screws are tightened, the copper deforms to form the surfaces between which the seal must take place. Therefore, copper sealing rings should never be reused; if you do, the seal is no longer guaranteed.
These copper washers have a specific size applied to the floats of the fuel tanks and, in addition, Volkswagen also used them to attach the direction indicators to the body on VW Type 3 models from 8.1963 to 7.1969.
