The cause of a poor gear change does not necessarily have to be in the gearbox itself, in many cases the cause is in the gear change mechanism. In the case of the 5-speed gearbox, the two drivers (selectors) mounted on the underside of the gearbox are often worn and cause excessive play and therefore problems when shifting gears. Replacing these conductors is the only way to get back to the right way of switching without play.
