The self-tapping sheet metal screws mentioned here were galvanized at the time and then polished to give them a bit more shine. In the 1980s, Volkswagen removed the polished versions from the lineup and replaced them with standard galvanized versions, which also had their part numbers changed.
Polished galvanized steel is still possible in practice, but it is no longer used for screws. Polished stainless steel is a much better substitute. The appearance is identical, except that it can never rust again. Since the screws listed here are used not only on the interior, but also on the exterior where rust lurks, you create a win-win situation.
