For older Volkswagens there are no complete brake shoes available, for these cars you will have to rebuild the existing brake shoes. Drill out the rivets and provide the brake shoes with a new lining which must be riveted to the shoe in the same way.
This way of replacing the brake linings was mainly used in the past. Today, we rely on speed and the complete replacement of the brake shoes is much faster than the replacement of the lining. The brake linings mentioned here are not only applicable to the oldest cars, but also to the rear, even for the years of construction up to 1967. If you want to keep the original as much as possible, you should consider relining your existing brake shoes.
Brake dust builds up against the brake shoe. By sanding the top and bottom at an angle, the brake dust has no chance to accumulate there and therefore does not end up between the brake shoe and the brake drum. Too much brake dust makes the brake shoes smoother. If you ensure that this happens as little as possible, not only can you do more with your brake shoes, but braking performance is positively affected.
