The Karmann Ghia underwent its final facelift in the 1972 model year. Numerous modifications were necessary to meet increasingly stringent safety requirements, which applied mainly to the American market.
In addition, the Karmann Ghia evolved with the times, the finish was refined with, among other things, plastic panels which were mounted on top of the door and, on sedan versions, continue under the rear side windows.
These cover panels are placed on top of the door and rear side panel and continue just below the door and/or rear panel.
Under the influence of sunlight, the plastic becomes brittle and begins to crumble. This process cannot be reversed; replacement is the only solution.
