Es misst die freie Höhe des Kolbens im Verhältnis zum Rand des Zylinders, wenn sich der Kolben im oberen Totpunkt befindet. Diese Messung dient zur Berechnung des Raumvolumens über dem Kolben, das für die Bestimmung des Verdichtungsverhältnisses des Motors unerlässlich ist.
