In the case of vehicles equipped with IRS (free rear axles with constant velocity on both sides), the distance from the centre of the gearbox to both the left and right flange must be the same, allowing a slight deviation of a few millimeters. This distance, and thus the track width, can be adjusted by means of the spacers between the support sleeves and the mounting housing.
There must always be two rings on each side, the width of the track can be adjusted by placing two rings on the outside, two rings on the inside or by placing one ring both on the inside and on the outside. With these three possibilities, the correct distance is always possible. If not, it may be a consequence of a past collision and you will first have to find the cause and repair it.
The spacer rings are delivered per piece and should not be compared to the many imitations available, the rings mentioned here are original Volkswagen, they are recognizable by the notch on the side of the ring.
