Dust and moisture are fatal to the smooth operation of the sliding door lock. To ensure that no dirt can penetrate through the sliding door handle and rosette, a foam rubber seal was originally placed between these two elements.
Sponge rubber is excellent at repelling dust, but does not absorb moisture well, which is why this replacement is made of felt.
Felt easily repels dust and can absorb moisture, so it's highly unlikely to reach the mechanism. Once the rain has passed, the felt dries and is ready for the next shower or wash.
