engine types and codes The engine number indicates which type of engine is involved and with which engine capacity. The first letter(s) determine the capacity and type of engine and the following figures determine the year of manufacture. The engines up to and including July 31, 1965 had no letters for the engine number, which is why up to and including this year of manufacture only numbers are given.
replace a thread When you are working on your VW, you will encounter this problem at some point; a bolt of the crankcase cover doesn't really turn in the thread in the crankcase anymore. The more you try, the worse it gets. There is too little tension between the crankcase cover and crankcase, with oil leakage as a result.
Type 1 engine mount In this article we show how to mount the engine of a VW Beetle or Karmann Ghia, so it becomes clear what to look out for when you mount the engine and build it back in.
Engine overhaul - video 16 part 1 valves removal In this first part of video 16, we disassemble cylinder head valves and valve springs. In the first part, we start by demonstrating the tools and techniques used, and disassemble the valves of a relatively new cylinder head.
Engine diagnostics - video 01 crankshaft end play In the first video of this new series, we will look at how to measure the crankshaft end play. Measuring the crankshaft end play, will help you estimate if your engine needs a total overhaul. If the result of the measurement is greater than or equal to 0.15 millimeters, then the crankshaft clearance is too large, and a total engine overhaul is recommended.
Engine diagnostics - video 02 rockers and rocker arm In video fourteen of our engine overhaul video series, we disassembled and reassembled the rocker arms and rocker shaft. We will diagnose the rocker arms and rocker shaft in this video. Additional attention will be paid to the adjusting screws and adjusting nuts.
Engine overhaul - video 16 part 2 valves removal In Part 1, we showed the basic techniques for disassembling the valves and valve springs. We did this on a fairly new cylinder head.
When you`re dealing with a used cylinder head, disassembly may be a little less smooth.
Engine diagnostics - video 02 BONUS defective rockers arm parts In video two of this series, we measured the rocker arm parts, and compared them to the wear limits listed by the VW workshop manual. In this video, we will show examples of rocker arm parts that are in less good condition than these of our AB 1300 engine from video two. This should help, to better diagnose the rocker arm parts.
remove a threaded stud While working on old-timers, you may come across a situation where you think "how can I solve that?". In my case, I was looking for a solution to loosen a stuck threaded rod, without damaging it.
crankshaft end play Whether an oil leak is caused by a defective crankshaft seal or O-ring/packaging is not always easy to determine. At the bottom of the engine, near the flywheel, where the gearbox and the engine are connected to each other, you will see traces of engine oil.
