To machine the crankcase to fit the camshaft, there is a sealing plug on one side of the case (flywheel side) which is fitted between the two halves of the crankcase. It is advisable to replace this plug as a precaution. If it is deformed, the crankcase will no longer be watertight.
Two models are available from Volkswagen:
Metal plug with groove
For engine crankcases with a groove. This is the right plug for all crankcases produced in Germany and for our new crankcases.
Rubber stopper without groove
For crankcases without a groove. This is mainly the case with the latest crankcases produced by Volkswagen Brazil and Mexico. This groove-free plug is also a godsend if your existing plug leaks. You can now replace the plug without having to open the crankcase.
