Engine Overhaul - video 02 overhauled engines We show in this video all the engines that we overhauled for the video series. An AB 1300, an AS 1600, an AJ 1600 and a D 1200 engine, every step, every detail of the overhaul of these air-cooled Volkswagen engines will be discussed in this series.
oil consumption Oil leaks are easy to rectify, sometimes even without having to remove the motor. We have saved the more difficult cases for this article, so we did not call this "oil leaks part 2" but "oil consumption". The distinction between the two is sometimes difficult to make, hopefully the information that follows will bring clarity.
Engine overhaul - video 08 ignition time of cylinder 1 In this video we will determine the ignition timing of cylinder 1. This mark will be needed to correctly position the distributor drive shaft during assembly, as well as for ignition advance adjustment once the Type 1 Volkswagen engine is rebuilt.
crankshaft end play Whether an oil leak is caused by a defective crankshaft seal or O-ring/packaging is not always easy to determine. At the bottom of the engine, near the flywheel, where the gearbox and the engine are connected to each other, you will see traces of engine oil.
crankshaft seal replacement If you find that the crankshaft clearance is outside the factory specifications, replacing the crankshaft seal will not be a solution for the oil leak you have identified. If the crankshaft clearance is less than 0.30 mm, it makes sense to replace the oil seal, otherwise a total engine overhaul is the only worthwhile option.
Engine overhaul - video 06 find the TDC compression stroke We will explain in this video how to determine the top dead center, as well as which of the two top dead center moments is this one from the compression stroke. This is important in order to properly position the distributor drive shaft. Properly understanding how a four-stroke engine works is essential when you begin an engine overhaul.

mesuring the compression How can you determine very objectively how much wear the engine has? An indication of the wear level can be obtained by performing a compression measurement, the engine compression determines the power of your VW. Anyone can perform a compression measurement on an air-cooled or water-cooled VW.
