En nyckelring är en "liten" del som sitter i en kilspår på en axel eller ett nav. Det finns två typer: den platta kilen och den koniska eller koniska kilen.
Med den platta kilen passar kilen exakt in i axelns spår.
I en konisk kilmontering applicerar en kilformad kil en permanent förspänningskraft. Denna kil kallas även för halvmånekil.
I våra Volkswagen används den koniska kilen huvudsakligen för att säkra vevaxeln och generator- eller dynamorullen, och för att säkra fläkten på motorer av typ 1 och typ 3. De används också för att fästa kamaxelhjulet på vevaxeln och, på dieselmotorer, för att fästa kamremskivan på motaxeln. Delens specifikationer anger vad den används till.
Nyckeln får inte vara skadad eller sliten, och måste bytas ut om den är det.
