The steering column is locked at the bottom by a plastic clamping ring on which the cover is mounted. If cracks have occurred or if the ring is missing in its entirety, the steering column is loose at the bottom, which can lead to a dangerous situation.
As part of a general restoration, it is advisable to replace this clamping ring as a precaution, simply assuming that after many years of faithful service, the plastic has had its best time.
In addition to its function as a clamping ring, this ring also provides sealing, which is another reason to replace it.
