Locking wire and locking plates are the oldest methods of securing a bolt or nut. Our classic Volkswagen has both locking systems, but you will mostly encounter locking plates.
Each plate is for a specific bolt or nut and therefore cannot be used universally. The plate mentioned here is used to secure the bolts that attach the tie rods to the steering box. The center bolt (see "Options" tab) is used to secure the locking plate to the bracket.
The locking plate should always be replaced if the steering rods have become loose for any reason. If it is reused (straightening and bending), metal fatigue will occur, weakening the lock plate and rendering it useless as a locking device.
Since this part is made of stainless steel, it will not rust and therefore lasts longer.
