oil consumption Oil leaks are easy to rectify, sometimes even without having to remove the motor. We have saved the more difficult cases for this article, so we did not call this "oil leaks part 2" but "oil consumption". The distinction between the two is sometimes difficult to make, hopefully the information that follows will bring clarity.
installing the engine In edition 16 we explained how to remove the engine of a VW Beetle, two techniques were discussed. The most important points of attention for the installation of the engine are indicated in this article. During the installation of the engine you will have to position the pilot shaft of the gearbox perfectly opposite the centre of the clutch.
Engine adjustment - video 01 valve clearance The valve clearance is the first thing to check when adjusting an engine. If the valve clearance is not adjusted properly, then adjusting for example, the ignition, or the carburetor, will do little good. In this video we will show you how to adjust the valve clearance.
setting valve clearance The first technical work I ever did on my first Volkswagen Beetle was to set the valves. I didn't know much about the technology of the VW Beetle at the time, but I dared to do it, valve setting is easy to do yourself, you don't need many tools, and it's essential for the proper functioning of your classic.
Engine overhaul - video 16 part 2 valves removal In Part 1, we showed the basic techniques for disassembling the valves and valve springs. We did this on a fairly new cylinder head.
When you`re dealing with a used cylinder head, disassembly may be a little less smooth.
Engine Overhaul - video 01 video series preview In this video, we will give an overview of the most important steps during the engine overhaul of a type 1 air-cooled Volkswagen engine. Each step will be discussed in a separate video. We will show special tools and even homemade tools to help the enthusiast perform their engine overhaul.
crankshaft seal replacement If you find that the crankshaft clearance is outside the factory specifications, replacing the crankshaft seal will not be a solution for the oil leak you have identified. If the crankshaft clearance is less than 0.30 mm, it makes sense to replace the oil seal, otherwise a total engine overhaul is the only worthwhile option.
Engine diagnostics - video 03 pushrods In video fourteen of our series on engine overhaul, we disassembled and reassembled the rocker arms and pushrods. In this video, we will inspect the pushrods. The result of this diagnosis, will tell us if we can reinsert the pushrods, or if we need to replace them.
Engine overhaul - video 09 the fuel pump We will disassemble and reassemble the mechanical fuel pump from a VW Type 1 engine with carburetor in this video. The electric fuel pump is discussed in another video. The fuel pump pushrod and the fuel pump flange get extra attention in this video.
Engine overhaul - video 05 install the distributor drive shaft This is the continuation of video 04, we are now going to install the distributor drive shaft, both on an already rebuilt Volkswagen Type 1 engine and on a split Type 1 crankcase. We pay a lot of attention to the correct positioning of the drive shaft at the beginning of this video series, because it is crucial to be able to adjust the ignition properly, later, when the engine is overhauled.
