The shift control linkage mechanism of the VW Vanagon is much more complex than its predecessors. Excessive gear lever clearance may indicate a wear problem on a connection between the gear lever and the gearbox. The part that differs from all other parts in terms of wear resistance is the coupling that is mounted on the control linkage with the plastic ball via the selection lever. This connection is mounted on the pilot shaft of the gearbox, making it the first connection you will see from the gearbox.
Wearing the plastic ball causes excessive play which can only be resolved by completely replacing the fitting.
