When the differential makes noise, the cause is usually in the worn end bearings. The engine and gearbox must be disassembled, a job that is not scary for the experienced handyman.
Overhauling the gearbox is a bit more complicated and requires a bit more knowledge. To start with, you need a good book, preferably a "Official VW Service Manual" (indicated in the "Options" tab). Every detail is described there and, with the knowledge you probably already have, you can also complete this work.
Rear axle definitions :
Swing axles can be identified by a drive sleeve mounted on the gearbox side and, on the IRS they are separate shafts (constant velocity) with drive sleeves on both sides.
Note: The IRS bearing is also used as an internal front wheel bearing on the VW Vanagon. For more information on the front wheel bearing function, see front wheel bearing sets 71361 and 71362 .
