What many people tend to underestimate or ignore is that not all locknuts can be used for the same purpose.
The most well-known lock nut is the one with a nylon lock, which is also used here and there by Volkswagen, but it cannot be used for all purposes.
The nuts listed here are intended for applications that require a guaranteed lock, but must not rust, and where they must be resistant to high temperatures and/or resistant to liquids that could affect the lock. They are copper plated and to achieve locking, the top portion is oval shaped. Obviously, these nuts (like all other self-locking nuts) are for single use only. When reused, the lock disappears, which can lead to life-threatening situations. These nuts are very similar to the so-called copper-plated exhaust nuts, for which they were also used on some Volkswagens, but not on all models.
Volkswagen used these self-locking nuts for the applications below and they should not be replaced with any other type of nut. The number shown indicates how many are needed if you need to replace them all.
