Replacement of the engine hood rubber will be necessary for each restoration. There is no Volkswagen that still has the original factory rubber that does not need to be replaced. Due to the heat of the engine and the effect of sunlight, the rubber dries out and no longer offers much protection.
Until 1985, Volkswagen used to mount this rubber in a metal flange on the bodywork, after which it was a clamping rubber mounted on the engine hood. The reason why we had to wait until 1985 for this adaptation is incomprehensible, the rubber is much tighter and there is no more rust between the bodywork and the metal clamping flange. If you also want to install the system used from after 1985, remember that your flanges will disappear. So make a decision before you paint the car. This seal will fit all Volkswagen Beetles of every year.
For the original restoration, you must keep the original, so also keep the hood rubber on the body. You will probably also need new clamping flanges to replace the rusted originals, they are indicated in the related parts tab.
