In most cases, the engine compartment of the Volkswagen Buses, Beetles and Thing was not made lockable by default; in many cases, it was an additional option that was ordered separately.
Unfortunately, it is now necessary to closed everything you own to stop unwanted intruders. You might think there's not much to steal in the engine compartment, but it's child's play to disable the engine. You wouldn't be the first to face that.
Replace your existing lock with a lockable one and you are armed against vandalism. You will have an extra key on your key ring because the key does not match the remaining locks on your car. If you do not wish to, there are lock sets available for a few years of construction in which a lockable engine hood lock is also included (if available, see the Related parts tab).
