Volkswagen did not have a fuel gauge on board at the start of production, so the fuel level had to be measured using a ruler in the tank. From 1961, the situation changed and all Volkswagen Buses were equipped with an electric fuel gauge. On the VW Bus from April 1955 to 1961, it was possible to add this gauge, a hole had to be cut in the dashboard and a fuel tank equipped with a float had to be fitted.
If the fuel gauge no longer indicates a credible value, first check the fuel float in the tank. If you measure the fuel float and it turns out that it is in order, then the cause can only be found in the gauge in the dashboard, replacement is the only correct decision.
