Starting with the 1971 model year, most Volkswagen Beetle models were equipped with ventilation grilles behind the rear side windows. They allowed for better ventilation of the interior than before and eliminated air pressure when the doors were closed.
On the 1200 models, they were introduced in the 1974 model year and then only on the luxury versions.
Up to and including the 1972 model year, they came standard with a trim, which was later removed.
Both the grilles with the trim, as well as the completely black versions, are available again as new. Also completely chrome plated ones are available again. The latter have never been mounted originally, but they do enrich the exterior, especially if you have embellished all the other grilles as well.
