A VW Type 3 engine is equipped with an oil filler pipe that is attached to the bottom of the crankcase. If you want to use this crankcase for a Type 1 engine for a VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, VW Bus or VW Thing, you will have to remove the oil filler pipe and plug the remaining hole, as it no longer has any function with these engines.
Volkswagen used the same cover plate with the universal crankcase that was introduced in the 1970s. This replacement crankcase was suitable for both Type 1 and Type 3 engines, which allowed the production of a number of crankcases specifically for a certain VW model to be discontinued in order to reduce costs without further consequences.
The original crankcases and our super stock and bubble top crankcases, which are listed in the corresponding tab, are of the so-called universal type. If this housing is used for a Type 1 engine, the oil filler hole for the Type 3 engine will need to be sealed.
Don't forget to order the gasket and any mounting nuts, these can be found on the options tab
