There is a lot of complaining about the "malfunctioning" windscreen wiper system of our classic Volkswagens, while it worked well when it was delivered from the factory. You have to check it all carefully and replace the parts that show excessive play, after which your windscreen wiper system will function again as new.
It will never wipe as perfectly as what you are used to from a modern car, but looking at the age of your classic car, it is for that period a well-functioning system that is still useable in daily traffic. The sudden stopping of your windscreen wipers in the pouring rain has in many cases only one cause; corrosion between the outer sleeve and the shaft that moves your windscreen wipers has caused these two parts to get stuck. Regular maintenance by keeping the shaft in use with multi-spray can protect you from this phenomenon, although this should not be necessary.
The shafts are fitted with a seal at the factory to prevent moisture between the outer sleeve and the shaft. After years of service, the whole wears out and excessive play occurs so that the seal can no longer adequately do its job, moisture will wear out the mechanics. You can't take them apart, replacement is the only right way.
