In models with swing axle transmission, the gearbox oil passes through the rear axle to lubricate the bearings, the oil is stopped at the rear brake backing plates by seals, bushings and an oil seal. In the event of a leak, the gearbox oil penetrates the brake drums, reducing or even eliminating the braking effect. Check the seal regularly and immediately replace the seal, O-rings and retaining ring if necessary.
Two sets are available for all Volkswagens that are not equipped with a reduction box. A basic set, which not only lacks a few parts, but is also qualitatively of lower quality, and a complete set which is qualitatively equal to the original with all parts subject to wear and tear.
If you have a Split Bus or a VW Thing, only the basic set is applicable. If you still prefer a higher quality, take the separate retaining ring and seals (listed under the replacement parts tab) in addition to the basic kit. You only use the parts of the basic kit that are missing in the quality kit, so you have created a high quality basic kit yourself.
For a 100% sealing result, it is always advisable to slightly apply a liquid seal to the seals, add it to your order if necessary (see the options tab).
Gaskets : Both the basic set and the complete set are delivered with two seals, whereas Volkswagen used only one, namely between the back plate and the bearing housing cover. For a better seal, it is advisable to install a second gasket between the anchor plate and the support flange. In the complete assembly, this second gasket has a larger inside diameter, while in the base assembly, the second gasket is equal to the first one. With the basic set, you will need to increase the inside diameter to fit over the flange, which is not necessary with the complete set.
Note : The complete set comes with the outer spacer ring, not to be confused with the inner ring located behind the bearing.
