This seal is used for two purposes: as a seal for the oil filling pipe for type 3, CT/CZ and Waterboxer engines and as a seal for the cover plate for the new type 1 casings.
At one point, Volkswagen made the crankcase universal for type 1 and type 3 engines. The hole provided for the filling pipe of a type 3 engine was not applicable for a type 1 engine, it was closed by a cover plate.
If you have purchased an original Volkswagen or a replacement crankcase, they are also universally equipped. If you want to use the crankcase for a type 1 engine, you will need to close the oil filler pipe and you will need this gasket.
If you need to convert an original type 3 crankcase to a type 1 crankcase, you will need an oil dipstick holder conversion kit to change the oil filler pipe in one location to mount the dipstick. The seal shown here is the replacement of the seal supplied with the conversion kit.
