Replacement of the hood rubber will be necessary in any restoration. There are still few Volkswagens that have the original factory rubber, which does not need to be replaced.
With the heat of the engine and the action of the sun's rays, the rubber dries and fades and will no longer be able to offer much protection.
No matter what VW model you have, all hood rubbers are clamped to an edge or profile. If the rubber doesn't stay in place properly, find the solution in the profile it's clamped in, but preferably don't use glue. When restoring, you should check, replace or repair the profiles so that the rubber fits, sits or covers properly, to avoid any surprises during disassembly.
