On the Split Bus and the Bay Window Bus, the pitman arm is not mounted directly to the steering box, via a central steering rod, the auxiliary steering box is put into action where the pitman arm is located with the tie rods attached to it.
Play on the auxiliary steering gear is a common problem, especially on our older Volkswagen Buses, especially with late maintenance. The auxiliary steering gear should be lubricated at every service; if this is not done, the assembly will dry out and the bushings and center steering shaft will wear out.
With the kit mentioned here, the auxiliary steering box will be like new again and the backlash will be a thing of the past.
Note: Keep in mind that you will need special tools to do this job.
