What many people don't know is that Volkswagen never delivered separate shocks for the 1302 and 1303, the strut was at the same time the shock housing. When replacing a shock absorber, the entire strut was replaced, to prevent the strut from being seriously damaged by rust.
The aftermarket took advantage of this to develop shock absorbers that could be mounted in the existing strut housing. This was a much cheaper solution than replacing a complete strut that was only available from the dealer.
The shock absorber shown here is such a shock absorber that fits into the existing strut. To make sure it fits properly, a retaining ring is included in the delivery.
If you prefer to mount an original application, take a look at the alternatives tab where the complete strut is listed (which is equal to the original as the 1302 and 1303 left the factory).
