On older Volkswagen Type 1 engines with a metal oil filler cap, the seal is made of cork. On the latest batch of Type 1 engines, the metal cap has been replaced by a modern plastic cap with a rubber seal.
For both oil filler caps, the gaskets are available separately so that you can keep the original filler cap. If your oil filler cap needs to be replaced, it is listed in the "related parts" tab.
