The best way to cool your cylinders as much as possible is to use a Porsche cooling fan. This will normally cool an air-cooled 6-cylinder engine. You can imagine that this is more than enough for our 4-cylinder, a Porsche cooling fan cools about 6 times more, so cooling problems will never happen again.
However, when switching to this Porsche cooling system, some adjustments will have to be made. Keep in mind that with a type 4 engine, it can no longer be placed under the hood of the Bus, but you can now mount a type 4 engine in a car that originally had a type 1 engine. It is therefore possible, without any further adjustment, to replace your type 1 engine with a type 4 engine of 2.0 litres. A type 4 engine does not fit in the engine compartment that was previously equipped with a type 1 engine, with this Porsche metamorphosis this will become possible. Whether you equip a type 1, 3 or 4 engine with a Porsche cooling system, you are assured of the specific suction sound of the Porsche 911, this is already a good reason to make this modification.
The following items must be modified to replace your current cooling system for a Porsche 911 system.
Type 1 and Type 3 engines :
- your engine cooling shroud is replaced by a Porsche style cooling fan
- the cooling fan is replaced by a Porsche cooling fan with alternator
- the cooling fan is mounted with the mounting kit especially for type 1 engines
- the fuel pump has to be replaced
- the oil cooler is no longer necessary, the oil must now be cooled with an external oil cooler
- carburetors need to be mounted sideways
- a suitable throttle linkage system that runs behind the fanshroud (instead of through the front)
Type 4 engines:
- your engine cooling shroud will be replaced by a Porsche-style fanshroud.
- the cooling fan will be replaced by a Porsche cooling fan with alternator
- the cooling fan will be equipped with the special mounting kit for type 4 motors
- the fuel pump must be replaced by an electric fuel pump (only when replacing a type 1 engine)
- the oil cooler will be omitted, the oil must now be cooled with an external oil cooler
- it is necessary to fit other carburetors with manifolds
- a suitable gas linkage system
- the crankcase must be milled for the cooling fan with the mounting kit.
The necessary parts are discussed separately below.
Fanshroud
This fiberglass reinforced Porsche-style fanshroud replaces much of the original engine sheet metal. The cooling fanshroud for the Porsche 260mm cooling fan are not ready to be installed, they need to be adapted; cut holes for the intake manifolds, holes for the spark plugs and let them fit your crankcase and the rest of the cooling plates. The choice of material makes it easy to do this with a file and a saw. The fanshroud for the smaller 240 mm fan, on the other hand, is ready to be mounted and is also equipped with a rear panel and the sheet metal part behind the pulley. All fanshrouds can be painted in any color, the polyester can undergo the same repair and painting work as the metal parts.
Cooling fan
The most important part is the cooling fan, you can get it from an old Porsche 911 and have it serviced if you take into account the diameter. For type 1 engines we have a fanshroud for a 240 and 260 mm cooling fan and for type 3 and 4 engines it is only available for a 260 mm cooling fan.
Cooling fan mounting kit
To be able to mount the cooling fan in the Porsche, a mounting kit is required. For Type 1 and Type 3 engines, the mounting base is mounted where the alternator bracket and fuel pump were mounted, the supplied bolts replace the existing mounting studs. This mounting kit is also equipped with an oil filler that passes through the polyester blower with a connection for crankcase ventilation, as is also the case originally. An extra oil connection is also included if you are using a dry sump system. The mounting kit for the type 4 engine is a bit more radical, to mount it you first have to modify the crankcase, the fan curve has to be milled into the crankcase. We strongly recommend to completely disassemble the motor, a single grinding piece in the housing can have fatal consequences. Once this has been done, the resulting hole is sealed with the sheet metal supplied and the cooling fan is mounted on the motor with the clamp and mounting foot and the mounting material supplied. The mounting base is also equipped with a crankcase ventilation as in the original case. The mounting kits in our assortment are only suitable for a 260 mm cooling fan, you can adapt it to the smallest 240 mm cooling fan by shortening the strap.
Throttle linkage system
You now have to use side mounted carburetors, your original carburetor(s) are not suitable for this. Whether you fit a Weber, Dellorto or EMPI carburetor, they all have one thing in common: the accompanying throttle linkage system cannot be combined with a Porsche cooling system. This requires a specially designed throttle linkage system that is available for the most common carburetors.
