It's not always possible to rebuild your cylinder head with new valves and valve guides. With air-cooled 1300 and 1600cc dual intake engines, it often happens that the cylinder head is cracked and only one possibility remains, which is replacing. Other air- and water-cooled cylinder heads are less prone to cracking and should only be replaced in the event of severe engine damage.
Valves and valve guides are subject to wear and tear, so it is not advisable to reassemble them if the engine is completely overhauled. If you have the right knowledge and tools, you can replace valve guides, valves and possibly valve seats yourself. If this is not the case, we recommend replacing the entire cylinder head.
Most cylinder heads come complete with valves, valve guides, springs and, in the case of diesel engines, even a fully assembled camshaft. This does not apply to all engines, some are only available without valves and springs, but have valve guides and valve seats. With these cylinder heads, it is necessary to purchase the other components separately, as the valves and valve seats must be lapped together by hand or, if necessary, by machine, using a lapping compound.
Note: For completely filled cylinder heads, it is always advisable to perform a leak test before fitting the cylinder head. Although every cylinder head is factory tested, you should never blindly assume that this is also true, only then you have 100% certainty. This is obvious for the professional, but many amateur users are not familiar with the subject.
Additional explanation by brand :
Paruzzi
These cylinder heads are only delivered empty, reuse of springs, spring plates and valve storage is possible although new parts are preferred (see options tab). Never reuse your old valves.
EMPI
These are fully filled (complete) cylinder heads that have been developed over the years and are now better than the original. For example, a lot of attention has been paid to improving the cooling, high quality valves, hardened valve keepers and the combustion chamber has a capacity of 51,5 cc. These cylinder heads are manufactured by EMPI, with all operations and cylinder head filling taking place in the USA. In terms of quality, they are the best standard cylinder heads available for Type 1 and Type 3 dual intake engines.
AMC
These high quality cylinder heads are produced in Spain but are not ready to be assembled for the European market. The 1700 and 1800 cc's were prepared for an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system which was mainly used for the US market to meet the legal emission standards introduced from 1968 onwards. Under the exhaust valves there is an EGR port which must be closed if there is no EGR system (as is generally the case with Volkswagen vehicles intended for the European market). The port is accessible from the outside and can be closed with a M10 x 1.0 blind plug supplied as standard with the cylinder head.
WBX and Diesel cylinder heads are ready to be fitted, Diesel cylinder heads are also supplied with the camshaft.
