The supply of fresh outside air is essential for an air-cooled engine. On many Volkswagen models, this is done through air intake slots in the hood or side panel. On the VW Type 3, the situation is a bit different, the closed engine compartment makes it difficult to draw in outside air. On these models, the cooling air is forcibly drawn in through a direct connection between the fan and the outside air.
Due to the movement of the engine, it is not possible to establish a fixed connection, so a rubber connection is used. However, it is essential that this rubber does not have any cracks and that it fits properly. If it is not, heat from the engine is drawn in, which can lead to significant engine damage, especially if there is no oil temperature gauge to alert you.
Check the condition of the rubber at every service and replace it if cracks appear. Don't wait until they are torn, as it may be too late.
