The fuel tank flap of the Volkswagen Bus until 1966 is equipped with a lock that can be opened with a universal square key. At that time, it was not necessary to seal everything tightly. Yet Volkswagen anticipated by making the engine hood and fuel flap lockable, even if it was with a key that could be mounted on any VW Bus.
To protect the fuel door hole from damage, a rosette was placed on the fuel flap. There must be a seal between the rosette and the fuel filler flap to ensure that the paint cannot be damaged by friction contact. There is not a single VW Bus where this seal is still in good condition, often the rubber is partially decomposed or there is nothing in between.
