Model year recognition

Over the years, our classic Volkswagen has undergone numerous changes, most of which were made at fixed dates. From 1960 the model year runs ahead of the calendar year, a car built in October 1964 is from model year 1965 (the model change was made on August 1st 1964). On the registration papers of the car show the year that the car was first registered, that is not the exact year of construction. A car purchased in January 1973 , could have been in the showroom for eight months, so it was actually built around May 1972.

From 1980 the chassis number (VIN) consists of 17 characters. Volkswagen introduced this on the Beetle on november 1st 1979 and for the Bus on august 1st 1980. If a chassis number is needed to determine which product fits, we list a shortend version of the chassis number. When you enter the full chassis number in the tool below, we will shorten it automatically. Example: the shortend version is H-056031. If we list a chassis number instead of a model year, it could look like 2--H-056031 (2-- has been left off in the tool, this is not important).

Note: our chassis number check assumes that your car still has all the technical specifications as when it left the factory. This system is built as an extra service from which no rights may be derived.

First select the Volkswagen model and / or type, then specify the chassis number, which can be found on the registration papers. If these are not available, the chassis number is stamped into the chassis under the rear seat and in a bus in the engine compartment, then click Check.

First shown is the chassis number or the shortend version, followed by the model year. Next are two periods between which your car left the factory, i.e. the actual construction period.
